Module 1

Welcome!

In module 1, you will explore the Studio Habits of Mind framework and consider how studio-based learning can support creativity, reflection, problem-solving, and student engagement in your elementary classrooms. You will examine how artistic thinking routines can be incorporated into everyday teaching practices. Through examples, discussion, and reflection, you will begin planning ways to integrate the Studio Habits of Mind into your classroom.

 

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the eight Studio Habits of Mind and their role in supporting student thinking and creativity.

  • Analyze classroom examples and identify where Studio Habits of Mind are present within your classroom.

  • Reflect on your current classroom practices and determine ways to incorporate the Studio Habits of Mind.

  • Adapt a current classroom lesson or activity to include one or more Studio Habits of Mind strategies.

What you’ll do:

  • Watch the facilitator introduction video to Module 1

  • Complete the required reading

  • Watch the overview of SHoM with researcher Lois Hetland

  • Complete reflection of current classroom practices in art education

  • Review feedback from the facilitator

After watching the video, respond to the following prompts:

  1. What did you learn? Describe one idea from the video that helped you better understand the purpose of art education or Studio Habits of Mind.

  2. Which Studio Habit of Mind stood out to you most? Select one Studio Habit of Mind and explain why it felt important, interesting, or relevant to your teaching.

  3. How could this habit support learning beyond art? Describe how the habit might help students in another subject area, such as science, literacy, social studies, mathematics, or everyday problem-solving.

  4. Respond to two peers. In your replies:

    1. Identify a connection between your classmate's chosen SHoM and your own teaching experiences.
    2. Ask one question or provide one additional insight about the studio habit.

Assignment: Studio Habits in My Classroom


Purpose
Use Studio Habits of Mind to analyze a current art activity, craft, directed drawing, or arts-integrated lesson. Consider how the activity supports students' thinking, and identify opportunities to increase observation, creativity, reflection, and problem-solving.

Select an activity you currently teach or have taught in the past.
Examples: holiday or seasonal craft, directed drawing lesson, science art project, literacy art connection, classroom decoration project, arts-integrated lesson


Step 2- Write Your Reflection (200–300 words)
Using your chosen activity, respond to the following prompts:

-Which Studio Habit of Mind is most visible in the activity?

-How much of the activity is determined by the teacher? Consider: materials, subject matter, process, final product
-Describe one change that would provide students with greater opportunities for observation, experimentation, reflection, or creative decision making.
