Module 2

In this module, you will be introduced to arts integration as a way to bring the arts into your classroom while also teaching other subjects. Art can be woven into many themes to enhance a lesson's engagement. 

 

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Define arts integration and how it supports learning in other subjects.

  • Identify examples of adding creativity and student voice in arts-integrated lessons.

  • Adapt a current classroom lesson or activity to incorporate an arts integration strategy.

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to explore how art can strengthen science learning. By adding a Studio Habit of Mind or an arts integration strategy to a science lesson, scientific concepts can be taught in ways that make learning more engaging and meaningful.

Assignment

Use the provided template to select one current science lesson, classroom activity, or unit you already teach in 5th-grade science. Choose one Studio Habit of Mind or arts integration strategy to add to the lesson.

 

Possible North Dakota science connections include:

  • ecosystems and food webs

  • environmental stewardship

  • recycling and decomposition

  • Earth’s water systems

  • human impact on the environment

 

Examples from North Dakota 5th-grade science standards include:

  • 5-LS2-1: Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. 

  • 5-ESS3-1: Obtain and combine information about ways communities protect Earth’s resources and environments. 

 

In the template:

  • The science topic or lesson you currently teach

  • One Studio Habit of Mind you could incorporate

  • One simple arts integration idea connected to the science standard

    • ​Possible ideas:

      • drawing ecosystem food webs

      • creating nature sketchbooks

      • using recycled materials for scientific models

      • observational drawing during outdoor learning

      • artist/scientist journals

      • collaborative environmental posters or sculptures
