Module 4

In this module, you will complete an ecological art lesson as an artist. You will use the Studio Habits of Mind, arts integration, and ecological art to create natural inks and artwork inspired by contemporary artists.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify Studio Habits of Mind within an ecological art lesson.

  • Create and experiment with natural or found-material inks.

  • Connect ecological art to science, social studies, and ELA learning.

What you’ll do:

  • Watch the Module 4 Introduction Video

  • Review the Color of Home: Experimenting with Ink lesson

  • Learn about Heather Bird Harris and John Sabraw

  • Create simple, natural inks using available materials

  • Experiment with ink techniques

  • Create an artwork inspired by your environment

  • Reflect on the Studio Habits of Mind used during the process

Assignment: Connecting to Eco Art

 

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to experience an arts-integrated ecological art lesson from the perspective of a student. By participating in the lesson, you will apply the Studio Habits of Mind, explore ecological art, and reflect on how it supports learning across subject areas.

Part 1

Complete the Color of Home: Experimenting with Ink lesson.

As you work through the lesson, pay attention to the choices you make as an artist. Note how you are using the Studio Habits of Mind as you create.

After completing the lesson, submit the following:

  • One photo of your ink experiments or test sheets

  • One photo of your completed artwork

Part 2

Write a 1–2 page reflection that addresses the following:

  • What did you learn from creating and experimenting with natural inks?

  • Which Studio Habit of Mind did you use most during the lesson? Explain.

  • How did the lesson connect art to another subject area?
